Dog Health: Three Crucial Tips on Minimising Neck Injuries and Strain

by Linda Sullivan

Neck strain and injuries are common in canine pets because dogs are active creatures. The presence of this type of injury will cause extensive discomfort for the dog and possible complications. When your canine pet sustains a neck injury, you will notice symptoms such as an unusual posture, stiff neck and expressions of pain on contact with the neck. In this case, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian at a local vet hospital for treatment. Fortunately, most neck injuries can be prevented by changing some pet handling practices. Here are some simple tips to help you protect your dog from neck strain and injury.

Consider Using a Harness

If your canine companion is highly active, you should think about switching out the collar and leash for a harness. In general, most active dogs cannot keep still, especially when you are taking a walk. They will pull at the leash, and the force will be transferred to the neck. Over time, the constant pressure around the neck will cause stress to the bones, joints, nerves and skin in the area. The canine could develop repetitive stress injury, or an injury could occur suddenly. When you choose a harness, you will ensure that the pressure exerted on the dog's body is evenly distributed. Therefore, there will be minimal stress around the neck.

Manage the Dog's Weight

You should help your canine companion keep their weight at recommended levels. If your dog is overweight or obese, it will be more likely to fall and sustain injuries. For example, an overweight pet will not be safe when going up the stairs. Their centre of gravity will be unstable, and they will topple quite easily, increasing the risk of neck injuries. Moreover, you should note that excess weight can predispose the dog to other conditions such as diabetes and cardiac disease. You can manage the weight by encouraging exercise and regulating the calories intake by your dog.

Raise the Feeding Bowl

You should think about elevating your dog's feeding bowl instead of leaving it on the ground. For some canines, the ground is too far for them to eat comfortably without stretching the neck and causing unnecessary strain. When you elevate the bowl, the dog will be able to access food comfortably without stressing the neck, back and shoulders. You should consider this option particularly if your dog has had back and neck problems in the past or the animal has some physical disabilities. This small consideration can improve your pet's quality of life.
